Research

My principal interests are oriented on understanding of biodiversity and evolution through:

  • Genetics (population      genetics, molecular ecology, landscape genetics, phylogenetics and      evolution)
  • Ecology (biodiversity,      pollination ecology)
  • Conservation (conservation      genetics and biology and ecosystem services).

My principal geographical area of research is in the Neo-tropics, more specifically the cultural and geological variable Mesoamerica, which is considered a hotspot for biodiversity (Mittermeier et al 2004). Nevertheless I am also really curious about the dynamic of populations of pollinators in others regions of the world.

At present I focus on understanding the effects of habitat fragmentation and land use at different levels of biodiversity on populations of native bees in Mesoamerica and Germany. Until now I observed that small-scale Maya traditional milpa practices may enhance fruit set and selectively favour ground-nesting bees. With respect to interaction networks in Netropical areas it seems that they are robust within one year, however, the same appears to be negatively impacted in extreme weather conditions, particularly in areas of coffee plantations where severe deforestation is reported.  Besides I also found that native neotropical wild pollinators may be resistant to moderate habitat loss at the genetic level and therefore potentially able to deliver pollination service for both native and crop plants, however we do not know how resistant they can be in the face of climate change and I interested to understand their potential threat under this conditions. I also describe hidden diversity in the cryptic Lasioglossum (Dialictus) spp. of Yucatán and feel interested of this group from the rest of Mesoamérica.

My future goals are oriented to understand distribution of biodiversity of Neotropical bees that can give hints to understand global patterns and to study the different types of traditional agriculture for understand how they affect biodiversity principally of pollinators and the Ecosystem services that they provide.
